Darment – Battling the climate change

“Climate change means world wide warming of the climate. Phenomenon occurs due an increased amount of human produced greenhouse gases in our atmosphere; end result resembles a green house. These gases let the sun light trough, but prevent part of the heat to escape. Phenomenon allows life to happen here on the earth.
Due human actions on earth, amount of these gases are rapidly growing on our atmosphere. Fossilized fuels like oil and coal and are the main reasons for the warming phenomenon. According to researchers, the average temperature of the earth will rise with many celsius degrees when we reach the year of 2100. Average estimate for this rise is about 1,5-6,0 °C.” (Source)
At Darment, we want to be a part of change and a greener future. We took part in Finnish global warming prevention organization – Ilmastokummit – activities by compensating 30 tonnes of Co2 -fuels. In practise this means planting 30 trees in Finnish wood parks. The precise map of the wood plantations you can view from here.
Ilmastokummit -web shop showcases other possible ways to contribute to organization’s activities than by buying a tree : one can support organization and the climate change prevention by for example buying a carbon footprint estimation or wind turbine plantation setting ; recyclation of bicycles or even an abolition of EU’s carbon dioxide emission rights.
WHY TO BUY A TREE ; HOW THE WOODS ARE ACTUALLY BINDING CARBON DIOXIDE?
”Finnish woods are a carbon dioxide binders, since wood plantations are binding more carbon than emitting it to the surroundings. Finnish woods have been decreasing the amount of carbon emissions on our atmosphere for tens of years now.
When trees grow, they store carbon to their trunk, branches, roots and leaves. Carbon finally ends up in the atmosphere when plant litter decompose: at the end of natural life cycle of wood. When one puts wood into practical use, carbon is either stored (binded) or freed – depending on the final form of the tree. For example, a wooden house is a long term carbon storage, but fire branches and newspapers short term storages. Wooden products can be burned or recycled after use.
To ensure the maximum benefits of the forestry, we cannot only plant trees that are later to be cut. This way the carbon will once again reappear on the atmosphere – not binded in woods as the idea of well done forestry is. Forestry should be made with detailed plan how to ensure enough untouched plantations, so that trees are guaranteed to bind carbon during all of their life cycle. This is the main function of Ilmastokummit -plantations. (Source)
