Refrigerant R23 is an outgoing HFC refrigerant for extremely low temperatures
Refrigerant R23 is used in ultra-low temperature refrigeration systems. It is also used as a pure fire retardant to replace Halon 1301. R23 is most commonly used in cascade systems at an evaporation temperature of -40°C – -80°C and condensation temperatures of approx. -10°C – -40°C.
Refrigerant R23 and The future of high GWP and low ODP
R23 is among the HFC refrigerants (hydrofluorocarbons, F-gases) that pose no threat to the ozone layer (ODP=0) but feature a significant global warming potential. The GWP of R23 is as high as 18,400.
The maintenance use of refrigerants with a GWP of > 2,500 will be prohibited as of 1 January 2020 in the servicing and/or maintenance of refrigeration equipment with a charge size of at least 40 carbon dioxide equivalent tonnes. In terms of charge size, this corresponds to 2.7 kg of R23 and 10.7 kg of R404A, for example.
Therefore, this banned refrigerant may no longer be added to systems starting from 1 January 2020. However, the maintenance use of reclaimed or recycled F-gases will be permitted up to 31 December 2029 (Article 13 of the Regulation). Reclaiming refers to processing used refrigerant in a treatment facility to be very nearly equal to original quality.
Applications and use
R23 is primarily used in industrial refrigeration systems, such as medical freezers and environmental chambers.
Replacement refrigerants
Instead of R23, R13 and R503 have previously been used as ultra-low temperature refrigerants. In the future, a transition will be made to carbon dioxide.
