R449A refrigerant to replace R404A

Refrigerant R449A is a zeotropic HFO refrigerant boasting excellent cooling properties, energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. It is a perfect replacement for R404A, among other refrigerants.

R449A refrigerant is a sustainable solution

Due to its low GWP R449A is also a sustainable solution. It was designed to be used in commercial and industrial low and medium temperature applications with direct evaporation. R449A can achieve a 65% lower GWP compared to R404A.

Applications, use and replacement refrigerants

R449A is a suitable replacement for refrigerants R404A, R407A/F and R507. It can be used in new installations and as a direct replacement gas in existing systems.  Since there is some variation in capacity and power, this must always be considered with regard to handling, application and retrofitting.

Among other applications, R449A is used in commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.

In a test scenario (see link to case study publication below), it was found that R404A and R449A have an equally high energy consumption at low temperatures. At higher temperatures (32°C) R449A’s energy consumption was 4% lower than that of R404A.

With R449A, the compressor’s discharge temperature was higher, but still remained within reasonable limits in the application in question. Mass flow speed was also lower, due to which the state of the pipe cooling system must be taken into account in retrofitting.
